GitHub Halts New Copilot Sign-ups as Agentic AI Alters Developer Subscription Economics
GitHub has paused new sign-ups for its Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Student plans, while tightening usage limits across all individual tiers, due to increasing costs associated with agentic coding workflows that exceed monthly subscription fees. VP of product, Joe Binder, explained that these workflows involve long-running AI sessions that autonomously tackle complex problems, leading to higher compute usage. As of April 20, only the Copilot Free plan will accept new sign-ups, while existing users can upgrade or cancel with a refund option available until May 20. The changes are designed to shift heavier users towards the more expensive Pro+ tier, which offers significantly higher usage limits. Additionally, GitHub is restructuring model access, with the most compute-intensive models migrating exclusively to the Pro+ tier, reflecting a shift in the economics of AI-assisted coding.
