Sam Altman Apologizes for OpenAI's Inaction After ChatGPT User's Deadly Shooting
Sam Altman issued an apology to the community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, for OpenAI's failure to notify police about a ChatGPT user whose account was flagged prior to a tragic school shooting that left eight dead and 27 injured. In June 2025, OpenAI employees reviewed the flagged account, which contained discussions of gun violence, and some recommended alerting law enforcement. However, leadership overruled this suggestion, feeling the flagged conversations did not meet a 'higher threshold' for reporting. Following the incident on February 10, 2026, OpenAI has since adjusted its reporting practices and established communication with the RCMP, though changes remain voluntary as there are no legal requirements in Canada for AI companies to report threats. Altman expressed deep regret in his open letter, recognizing the pain and loss experienced by the community.
