Stripe has announced the creation of a new $500 million nonprofit organization named Intercept, aimed at preventing respiratory infections, including the common cold and flu. Funded by Stripe, Anthropic, the OpenAI Foundation, and other notable contributors, Intercept plans to support various prevention strategies such as vaccines and large-scale air-cleaning systems in public spaces. Stripe executive Nan Ransohoff highlighted the societal burden of respiratory infections, noting that people spend an average of 5% of their lifetime battling colds or flu. The initiative follows a similar approach Stripe took with its $1.8 billion carbon removal program, focusing on addressing technical challenges that lack commercial incentives. Collaborations with experts like structural biologist David Veesler will explore innovative solutions, including engineer virus-catching proteins to help combat infections before they occur.
