Investigating Prompt Injection in Automated Résumé Screening with Large Language Models

Research reveals the vulnerability of large language models (LLMs) in automated résumé screening to prompt injection, a technique where candidates subtly manipulate their text to influence evaluations. Controlled experiments demonstrate that prompt injection can enhance applicant rankings when résumé qualities are similar and few candidates engage in this practice. However, its effectiveness decreases significantly as more candidates adopt this strategy, ultimately failing when manipulation becomes common. The study also highlights fairness issues, as lower-quality candidates may occasionally surpass higher-quality ones in rankings due to prompt injection, particularly when candidate quality is heterogeneous. The research findings emphasize that LLM-based screening is most susceptible to manipulation when it is rare and candidate quality differences are minimal.
