Ford has rehired 350 veteran engineers after facing disappointments with artificial intelligence and automated systems in quality control. The company's COO, Kumar Galhotra, highlighted that reliance on automated systems did not yield the expected quality results. The rehired engineers, referred to as 'gray beard' engineers, will assist in identifying failure points before production and will also train younger staff and reprogram AI tools. Ford anticipates this strategy will lead to $1 billion in cost reductions this year, while also achieving the top position among mainstream brands in the JD Power Initial Quality Survey.
