FlexSQL is a novel text-to-SQL agent designed to improve interaction with large analytical databases by allowing flexible exploration of schema structures and data values. Unlike traditional systems that rely on a fixed pipeline, FlexSQL can execute verification queries at any stage of reasoning and generates diverse execution plans to accommodate various query interpretations. Using gpt-oss-120b, FlexSQL achieved a 65.4% score on the Spider2-Snow benchmark, surpassing established open-source models. Additionally, when integrated into a general-purpose coding agent, it demonstrated over a 10% relative performance improvement. This research underscores the importance of flexibility in the design of text-to-SQL systems. The code is accessible on GitHub.
